Gary and his family have lived in Newtown for more than 18 years, along with their dogs Fred and Zoey, and cats Socks and Lily. His three children attend Newtown public schools; his oldest daughter will be graduating this year.
Gary was a registered Republican, but decided to help co-found the Independent Party of Newtown for one simple reason: he felt elected officials from the two traditional political parties in Newtown were not effectively addressing the critical needs of the Newtown community. As a current member of the Legislative Council serving his first term, his focus has been to promote better long-range planning, and to support efforts to improve our schools, recreation, and keep Newtown affordable for all. He is a champion of a more transparent government that communicates better with its citizens. To that end, his call for better communication between town government and citizens was a contributing factor in the creation of the Legislative Council’s Communications Subcommittee. As a subcommittee member, he encouraged the video and audio recording of this year’s budget meetings to make it easier for citizens to follow the budget deliberations. He also has been a proponent of modifying the current CIP and budget processes to make them more effective, efficient and transparent to the public.
Gary grew up in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. and is a graduate of Roy C. Ketchum High School in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Dickinson College and a Masters in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a Vermont Royster-Dow Jones Fellowship.
He has been in the field of Public Affairs for more than 27 years working in the energy and entertainment industries. For the past nine years, Gary has worked with World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., and currently holds the position of Vice President, Global Public Affairs. One of the highlights of Gary’s experiences at WWE was to organize trips involving WWE Superstars to visit our troops on the front lines in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Sudan in coordination with Armed Forces Entertainment. Last year, Gary worked with Reed Elementary School to feature letters to the troops from Reed students as part of an NBC television special about WWE’s visit to entertain troops in Iraq.
Gary is on the Board of Directors of the USO of Metropolitan Washington and the Connecticut Grand Opera & Orchestra.
